VOTERS CHOOSE
Former county commissioner Philip Jay will take over in January as the new chairman of the Ben Hill County Commission after defeating the incumbent chairman, Larry Davis, in last week’s Democratic General Primary. There is no Republican or independent opposition. In other commission races, Eastern District Commissioner Richard Goodman won re-election over challenger Delene Clark — 589 to 412. This will be Goodman’s fourth term as commissioner for District 1, Post 1. Incumbent Democratic County Commissioner Kathy Davis will face Republican challenger Lance Hennessey in the November 4 General Election for the right to represent District 3, Post 2 of the Western District. Associate Probate Judge David Hobby handily defeated challenger LInda King in the Democratic Primary — 2,009 to 595. Hobby will face Republican candidate Robb Birmelin in November. In the race to replace Clerk of Superior Court Laverne Wheeler, who is retiring, Betty Lynn Johnson defeated Jerrold Hogan by a wide margin — 1,802 to 752. In the only other contested county race for November, Democrat Romelle Green will face Republican Cauley Bowen for Magistrate Judge.

WAVE OF THE FUTURE?
Some citizens are looking to alternative transportation in the wake of spiraling gasoline prices. John Engelmann, above, drives his golf cart to and from work each day and expects to save about $1,000 a year doing so. Fitzgerald Police Chief Bill Smallwood says Englemann is within bounds as long as he only drives his cart in daylight hours and stays off state highways. Others are turning to motor scooters, motorcycles, bicycles — and their feet.

10 YEARS OF SUCCESS
Redevelopment can be simply described as cleaning up our city. Describing and doing are two different things. Mayor Gerald Thompson, the Fitzgerald City Council and Community Development Director Cam Jordan created a template for success in 1998 where none existed. The program’s success is rarely matched anywhere, and is a statewide model for building healthy communities. Jordan reviewed the program’s last 10 years for the Fitzgerald City Council Monday night.

CENTURY OF FOOTBALL
The 2008 football season kicks off the 100th season for the Fitzgerald High School Purple Hurricane football team. The team won’t be wearing leather helmets, but the boys will be wearing special commemorative uniforms and “old gold” colored helmets, and lots of plans are being made to honor the team and its history. Click the football above to see lots of photos and stories about previous Hurricanes.

ORIENTATION
Fitzgerald High School will hold orientation for incoming ninth graders Friday at 1 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All ninth graders and their parents are invited to come and get acquainted with FHS.

COLONY CITY HISTORY

FROM ATLANTA TO ATLANTIC
Atlantan Scott Stephens and his son recently kayaked from Atlanta to the Atlantic, following the Ocmulgee River. The 16-day journey took them through Abbeville, where they became unexpected guests at a political rally. Read Scott's story on this week's Feature Front.

YOU TELL US
POLL RESULTS
We have Democratic and Republican candidates for President now. Who is your pick for the November election? send us an e-mail. Most of the respondents to our last poll — 126 of 192, or 66 percent — desccribed themselves as deeply concerned about the U.S. economy. Another 23 went beyond that, to the "sky is falling" reaction. Thirty, or 16 percent, said they were moderately worried, while 12 said they were not worried and one lone soul didn't see a problem at all.
